5-Day Blues Boot Camp Challenge Replay

Day 1 | 12-Bar Blues

We broke down the 12-bar blues in E with 3 playing levels — from beginner-friendly shuffle riffs to sliding seventh chords and a slick turnaround lick.

Challenge for Day 1:
  • Learn and play the 12-bar blues in E using any of the 3 versions (beginner, intermediate, or advanced).

  • Record yourself, upload your video to the Facebook group, and get feedback + a chance to win prizes.

Day 2 | Play Blues In Any Key

We focused on the essential theory behind playing blues in any key. We learned how to build a 12-bar blues using the 1-4-5 chord progression with dominant 7th chords, how to find notes on the fretboard using simple patterns, and how to create a turnaround to wrap up the progression smoothly.

Challenge for Day 2:

  • Create your own 12-bar blues in any key using 7th chords (I–IV–V).

  • Add a turnaround at the end, and upload your video to the Facebook group.

Day 3 | Play Licks Using The Blues Scale

We dove into the open E blues scale and explored how to add an extension to expand your fretboard vocabulary. We talked about the importance of muscle memory, practiced playing the scale, and learned a classic blues lick. Then we brought it all together by using the lick over a 12-bar blues progression in E.

Challenge for Day 3:

  • Practice the open E blues scale (and its extension) using alternate picking.
Learn the blues lick and play it over a 12-bar blues in E.

  • Practice and upload your video to the Facebook group.

Day 4 | How To Use The Pentatonic Scale Musically

We explored the minor pentatonic scale pattern and learned how to move it anywhere on the fretboard to play in any key. We compared major and minor pentatonic sounds, discovered how to switch between them, and practiced phrasing techniques like call-and-response, dynamics, and adding slides, hammer-ons, and pull-offs to make solos sing.

Challenge for Day 4:

  • Jam over a backing track in A minor using the minor pentatonic scale pattern. Then, shift into the major pentatonic by moving your root 3 frets down.

  • Record your solo and share it in the Facebook group.

Day 5 | Pick Up & Play

In this lesson brought together everything from the previous four days into a practical “pick up and play” system for blues improvisation.

Challenge for Day 5:

  • Improvise over a 12-bar blues progression in a key of your choice.

  • Upload your video to the Facebook group and show us your groove!
